Back in January 2009, soon after the official release of Windows 7 Beta, when we first published how to install Windows 7 from the USB guide, there was not even a single software to easily create a bootable USB of Windows.
Over the years, plenty of tools have been released to create a bootable USB of Windows operating system. Although there is an official tool called Windows USB/DVD Download Tool, most users prefer using the reliable Rufus tool as the official tool often throws ”The selected file is not a valid ISO file” error.
ISO2Disc to create bootable USB
ISO2Disc is another free utility designed to prepare bootable USB of Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7 from ISO files. Although ISO2Disc name sounds very similar to ISO2USB, both are different but offer similar functionalities.
The user interface is straightforward. There are no settings to configure. You need to select your USB drive, Windows ISO file, and then the type of the partition (GPT or MBR) to begin creating the USB. In addition to creating bootable USBs, it supports creating bootable DVDs as well.
Create Windows To Go
The ability to create Windows To Go drive is one of the highlights of ISO2Disc, which makes it one of the few third-party tools around to prepare Windows To Go USB drive. As you likely know, with Windows To Go feature, one can install and carry Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 on USB flash drives with ease.
The only thing you need to remember is that the option to create Windows To Drive doesn’t appear when you select Windows 7, Vista, or Windows XP ISO file. You need to select Windows 8, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10 ISO image file to enable Windows To Drive option.
The current version of ISO2Disc is fully compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.
Overall it’s a good piece of software. Although it is not as feature-rich as the best-in-class Rufus, novice users who prefer using software with no complicated settings will definitely like ISO2Disc.
The only downside, in my view, is the lack of a portable version of the software.
