Microsoft Brings Skype Translator Into Its Skype For Windows Desktop App

Skype Translator is a speech to speech translation application developed by Skype, and publicly available since December 15, 2014. Microsoft has now announced that we will soon be able to talk to people from all over the world in our desktop apps, as well!

Microsoft released Skype Translator just over a year ago, and its new feature has been enjoyed by millions already, as it allows users to speak in their own language while their interlocutor gets a translated version into his own language. This is impressive as it is happening almost in real-time.

But as as great as this new feature is, there was a huge drawback, it wasn’t available for desktop users, which, let’s face it, are still the vast majority of Windows users. In order to use Skype Translator, one still needs to download a standalone app for that. However, according to Microsoft, at the end of this summer, Skype Translator will become available as an integrated component of the existing Skype desktop app for Windows. Just how awesome is that! Yasmin Khan with the company said the following:

At the moment, the Skype Translator preview currently works with four spoken languages – English, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin but it comes with support 50 written languages. Of course, it’s much harder to translate in real-time an audio feed, but Microsoft’s team is working on adding more languages as we speak.

To bring Skype Translator into more people’s lives, today we are happy to announce that the Skype Translator preview technology will be coming to the Skype for Windows desktop app. We are targeting the end of summer 2015 for the roll-out to begin.
